The World's Best Mac & Cheese

GUYS. 

I think I might have just invented the world's best Mac & Cheese.

SERIOUSLY.

And I think I'm going to put the recipe up.

Seriously.

I don't have much else to say,

... But you might want to turn your oven on.


The World's Best Mac & Cheese

Ingredients (Serves 3 people)

  • Macaroni   450g
  • Whole White Mushrooms   227g (1 package)
  • Pancetta   150g
  • Mild Cheddar, grated   1 cup + 1/2 cup for topping
  • Gruyère, grated   1 cup + 1/2 cup for topping
  • White Wine   ~
  • Heavy Cream (35%)   3 cups
  • Parsley   ~   

1) Cook the macaroni in boiling water. You can use any type of macaroni, but I prefer this type...



2) Cut the mushrooms into thick slices (about 2cm) and the pancetta into small cubes


3) Grate 1 cup of cheddar as well as 1 cup of Gruyère and combine the two. Grate 1/2 cup of each for the topping to use at the end and keep it aside.  

4) Cook the pancetta in a frying pan and leave it aside in a bowl. Don't discard the oil !
5) Cook the mushrooms in the same frying pan and add the cooked pancetta. When the two are well combined, add a splash of white wine and season with salt and pepper. 


6) Reduce the heat to medium-low and add the cream. Simmer until the flavours are well combined and add some chopped parsley at the end.


 7) Throw in the grated cheese and stir well until the cheese is melted and the mixture combined.


8) Pour the mixture into the pot of macaroni and mix well.


9) Transfer into a baking dish, sprinkle the top with the remaining cheese and bake at 375°F (180°C) for about 25 minutes.  


And there you have it. 

 Have some kleenex handy and be prepared to cry for this piece of art ! : p

Poutine & Wings Night at Clocktower

Yup, you heard it.

Getting a delicious poutine on the patio wasn't enough for me. I had to add a pound of maple BBQ chicken wings and a glass of fruity, really well-made sangria.
(Just for the record, I wasn't alone.)


Now, let's admit it.


Pub food is amazing.


An amazing hit-or-miss. Some places will mess up your drink, some others, it's the food. A few will ruin both, and all of them screw up the prices.


But hey, a warm night on the patio sipping on some sangria, munching on some wings that cost you more than a dollar each is not that bad after all.


And honestly, Clocktower is one of the few pubs that actually have good drinks (their sangria is my second favourite so far after Mambo) and good food.


They only had smoked meat poutine, which I am not a fan of and was able to change it to just a regular poutine. Fair enough.



It was nothing exceptional, but still delicious!



And the wings...


Crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside.


They had a good selection of different sauces, and the maple BBQ one that we chose was definitely a good pick.

They also had a side of sour cream, which I thought was an awesome idea, especially for something that has a BBQ-y flavour to it.


The mildness of the sour cream was actually a great addition to the tangy BBQ sauce, which also kept us going and going... which was also the scary part, because as good as they are, you don't want to keep eating an infinite amount of chicken wings...


...Unless you'd want to pull a move a la White Chicks.


Anyway, all in all, I think Clocktower is a great place to hang out.

We got a pretty crappy service that night (er... server ignoring us the whole time to play chips/cheerios basketball with his nose, and pretty much smashing the receipt on the table without saying a word when he saw we didn't leave a tip for the service? Not good...), but since that was the first time it ever happened there, I can say they usually do a good job.

Sunday Brunch at the Scone Witch

Ever been to a chain store, got really bad service AND not-so-great food (as if the first part wasn't bad enough), and got amazing service and delicious food at one of their other locations?

It's interesting how small things can make such big differences, but this was actually one of them.

The Scone Witch has two locations in Ottawa: the one located downtown, and the other one on Beechwood.

I went to the downtown location first, unfortunately for me.

Though I'm not going to get into details, I personally thought I would never go back.

And then, I discovered the other store.

... And I fell in love again ♥




First, after ordering your food, you get a number that you bring with you to the table.





We ordered two cafés au lait, not knowing they would be so huge (they were the size of a soup bowl), and the food came pretty fast. 












We chose the brunch menu, which is awesome and lets you choose the type of scone you want (sweet or savoury, including vanilla cream, cranberry-orange, cheddar), the jam (different flavours), a side (smoked salmon, ham, etc,) and comes with fruits, a small salad and the fluffiest, most delicious scrambled eggs I've ever tasted (≧▽≦)☆











I got the herbs and onion scone with a side of mushroom ragu, and everything was delicious!

They forgot the salad dressing at first, and obviously I HAD to tell them because they have this honey-mustard dressing that I love, that I could probably drink out of the bottle itself... So sad.


Instead of the jam, we got Devon Cream.

If you've never tried Devon cream before...

Run.

Run to the grocery store right now.

But you know what's better? Clotted cream. The difference is subtle, but you'll notice it.

They're both very thick creams that have a very rich taste to them. Not sure how else to describe it, but I know for sure they're pretty addictive.

All in all, if you're looking for a nice spot to have a week-end brunch, this is it. 

Just make sure you pick the right location...
